The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) report highlights that transportation contributes 33% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, with light-duty vehicles, trucks, and buses accounting for 70% of these emissions. To meet the climate goals set under the Paris Agreement—reducing emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050—the report underscores the necessity of drastically reducing transportation emissions. Key strategies include enhancing land-use planning, promoting public transit and rail investments, raising fuel economy standards, and developing a national network of electric vehicle charging stations. Despite these efforts, the DOT’s initiatives face challenges, including legal opposition and political resistance. The report’s findings were discussed at a recent transportation and climate symposium in Washington, D.C.
